Hernias
It is estimated that about five million Americans suffer from hernias. Every year about 750,000 seek some form of treatment. Many experts believe that there are a lot of people who go untreated because they fear to go under the knife!
Today this is really not the case. Hernia surgery is often performed laparoscopically, that is, using minimally invasive techniques. This type of surgery is also known as videocopic surgery, or keyhole surgery. With this type of surgery tiny incisions only millimeters in size are made on the patient. These small incisions serve as passageways for specialized surgical instruments as well as a laparoscope. This is a fiber-optic instrument which tramits pictures from within a body to a video screen. This permits the surgeron to see the field he is operating in. That means that these people have a quicker recovery time, have less scarring and much less pain than the traditional type of surgery.
The University of Maryland Hernia Center uses the most advanced laparoscopic methods to treat hernias of all types. This type of surgery not only reduces the time spent in the hospital, but it includes a quicker recover period, and it reduces the risk of infection. Most surgeries that are performed here are done so laparoscopically. However, the doctors at this medical center are also extrememly experienced in performing traditional hernia sugery. With the traditional method, a large incision must be made. This is also known as "open" surgery. Each treatment is best determined to suit the needs of every patient.
The University of Maryland Hernia Center's doctors are leaders in the field of treating both routine and complex hernia cases. With most surgery, the BEST surgery is the FIRST surgery. Therefore, the doctors at this medical center endeavor to get the surgery done right the first time. The center treats the following types of hernias: Congenital, epigastric, hiatal, recurrent, inguinal, femoral, umbilical, and ventral or incisional.
The team of specialists at the medical center offers a full gammet of diagnostic and treatment services available. They offer both laparoscopic and standard procedures which include the following:
Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair
Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication for GERD or hiatal hernia
UM Hernia Center surgeons Adrian Park, M.D. and Scott Roth, M.D. have a geat deal of experience with hernia repair. They specialize in the hardest kinds of cases. They have even helped pioneer some of the minimally invasive techniques that are used. Dr. Park is one of the leading experts on the minimally invasive treatment of hernias in the abdominal wall. These doctors are teaching our future doctors and community doctors about how to perform these procedures.
Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach
This approach to our patients is something that most other facilities do not offer. The medical center works with diffenent types of surgeons including pediatric, thoracic, plastic and trauma in order to have the best outcome for each patient. It is here where we bring the doctors to the patient. Patients may also have the opportunity to take part in clinical trials.
